On the occasion of the celebration of the twenty-third anniversary of Resolution 1325, the International Observatory for Peace, Democracy and Human Rights (IOPDHR-GENEVA-NGO) highlighted and celebrated the successes of women as drivers of change in the pursuit of peace. The conference took place on the afternoon of March 12, 2024 at the Geneva International Conference Center, on the sidelines of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council.

 

 

The event was an opportunity to reflect more deeply on how civil society can continue to support these exceptional women and promote a lasting culture of peace. Discussions focused on several key themes:

 

- The role of women in promoting peace and security.

- The challenges of implementing Resolution 1325.

- The role of civil society and mediation in conflict resolution.

- Mechanisms to strengthen women's participation in peace negotiations.

- Legal and social protection and combating violence against women during armed conflicts and humanitarian disasters.

 

The conference, moderated by Ms Karima Rhanem, President of the International Center for Diplomacy, was held face-to-face and in three working languages: French, Arabic and English. Among the keynote speakers and panelists, we were honored to welcome :

 

- Ms Aicha DUIHI, President of the International Observatory for Peace, Democracy and Human Rights.

- Ms Sophie Giscard d'Estaing, Program Coordinator at the Women Peace and Humanitarian Fund.

- Ms Ndaté DIENG, Lawyer and President of the Afrodysée Genève human rights association.

- Ms Jessica FORSYTHE, Deputy Director of Beyond Borders Scotland Foundation.

- Ms Naima KORCHI, President of Africa Women's Forum.

 

This side-event aimed to celebrate women's contributions to peace and security, explore the challenges and opportunities of implementing resolution 1325, and discuss ways of improving women's participation in peace processes.
